Rachael Slate

Rematch by Rachael Slate

Description

Thirteen Zodiac animals entered the Great Race. Only twelve became Chosen…
After failing the test to join the Lotus League, Wen Pierce will do anything to prove herself worthy. Even if it means being demoted to a maid in the house of one of the Eight Immortals—Li Tieguai. But this seductive yet surly immortal wants only one thing—her surrender to his rigid control. On his remote, magical island she’ll fade into the background of his tortured existence. Unless she can convince him she can steal anything…including the one thing he believes he’s lost forever.

A spirit outcast and denied…
Tricked by the Monkey King, Li Tieguai lives in shame and surrounds himself with other outcasts, like the spirit animal Cat. But when the vibrant and sultry Wen is assigned to his household and offers to thieve for him, she just might steal more than he planned.

On the edge of redemption, lies temptation…
Li isn’t the only one who can’t resist Wen. The spirit Cat offers Li the solution he’s longed for, but to atone for his past, he’ll have to risk a future…without Wen.

5 Stars

She would never be his because she COULD never be his.

“Wen was an enchanting mortal. That was the problem. A mortal.”  WOW!!  I wasn't sure if I would want to read, nor would I like a story without Sheng, Lucy and the rest of their 'kongsi' in it, but WOW!!  Rachael has mesmerized me yet again!  I shouldn’t have been so “surprised” or have doubted her since her debut novel was (and still is) FANTASTIC!  But you know how it is when you love a book, you are convinced that nothing will compare to it and even worse, it might actually take away for the charm of the first book!  Silly Cherri!  There was nothing to worry about at all!  Other than the ending coming too soon, as it usually does with books you love!  I actually went back to read Trancing the Tiger again to refresh my memory - and thoroughly enjoyed it again I might add - and while there was the odd reference, it really wasn't necessary, enjoyable as all hell, but unnecessary.  (Although I do get the impression that this story will play a part in the book or books to come!) This story is about Li, an immortal in exile trying to atone for his past, and Wen who is mortal, all alone since recently losing her brother and failing the Lotus League test, both wanting more but thinking they do not deserve it.  I absolutely loved this story!  It is a little more on the sadder side, it won't make you cry, maybe a little more solemn or heart wrenching, would be better terms.  However the things that happen, the others involved - The Matchmaker (need I say more?) - the truths discovered,  the surprises, the mystery surrounding Wen & Li all add up to one sweetly enchanting tail of a story!  Pun fully intended!  Rachael has yet again shown her amazingly talented prowess with another fantastic & beautifully written story involving the Chinese Zodiacs!!  I cannot wait for more!  I am completely entranced!
